Flathead Lutheran Bible camp, nestled on the shores of pristine Flathead Lake, in the Rocky Mountains of Montana, holds a special place in the hearts of countless individuals who have walked its trails, sung songs of praise at worship and around its campfires and found solace beneath its towering pines. Here, amidst the natural beauty of Montana’s wilderness, people of all ages have discovered a place of community, acceptance, and spiritual nourishment.
Outdoor Ministry programs have long been a vital part of youth development in America, offering unique environments where young minds can explore their faith, build lifelong friendships, and develop essential life skills. From challenging outdoor adventures to contemplative moments, Camp provides a deep well of positive experiences for personal and spiritual growth. The power of outdoor ministry lies in its ability to create transformative moments that leave indelible marks on the hearts and souls of generations of participants.
This history was written to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp in 2023. It is dedicated to the people who pursued their vision of an outdoor ministry experience for people of all ages. It weaves together an intricate tapestry of stories, memories, photos, and milestones that have shaped this sanctuary of faith, fellowship, and personal spiritual growth on the present site for 80 years.
In eight decades of ministry, 80,200 children have attended the Camp and 24,100 children have attended week-long Day Camps held in Churches across Montana provided by Flathead Lutheran Camp staff. Countless adults have also grown through the many spiritual retreats held at the Camp.

The Beginning 1930's
ReadThe ministry of Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp was born in the midst of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression.

The Search for Land 1942

A Sudden Realization in Spring 1943
ReadOnce the land was purchased, people quickly realized they had a lot of work to do if there was to be a week of summer camp that July.

The First Week of Camp 1943
ReadA Circus tent or a Revival tent? The inaugural week of camp, the first and only week of summer camp in 1943, began on Sunday, July 18th.

Rapid Growth 1944 - 1949
ReadEnthusiastic volunteers, gifts from congregations and individuals, and Montanans eager to be a part of strengthening the Christian faith of young people drove the Camp’s growth in the 1940s.

Growth and Building 1950's
ReadMost summer camp leaders were pastors from Montana congregations. Cabin counselors were college student volunteers.

The 1960’s Were Unique
ReadThree things not seen at camp before or after the 1960s were: the monster water slide in the swimming area, the giant water swing on the swimming dock and children learning to water ski.

A Year Around Ministry Emerges 1970's
ReadSummer camps on site were broadened to include 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. High school camps grew to include backpacking, canoe trips and bike trips.

Expanding Programs 1980's
ReadIn January of 1980, Rev. Gary Cockrell was called to be the Executive Director.

Already 50 Years Old 1990's
ReadThe 50th Anniversary of the Camp ministry was held June 19, 1993. Speakers from 5 decades shared faith stories. New camps and retrets were added and camper numbers entered the thousands.

Blessings of Land 2000's
ReadGracious donors blessed the Camp with adjoining lakefront property increasing the Camps ability for ministry.

Widening Horizons 2010's
ReadAfter a nationwide search, Margie Fiedler was called as the Executive Director and began her ministry in September of 2011.

The Pandemic and Renewal 2020 - 2023
ReadDue to the coronavirus pandemic, the Camp was closed from March through Mid-June of 2020 and summer camp was refocused on family weeks and family weekends.
